Supporting Healthy School Communities
Ever Active Schools uses the internationally recognized Comprehensive School Health framework for all of our professional learning and projects. My work as a School Health Facilitator allows me to work with a wide variety of communities on a number of projects and initiatives, each using a CSH approach and focused on priority areas of physical activity, mental well-being and healthy eating.
Ski, Skate and Slide: Developing Physical Literacy in the Snow & Ice
I have had the opportunity to spearhead the creation of "Ski, Skate and Slide" a new resource from Ever Active Schools, created in partnership with provincial and national winter sport organizations such as the Canada West Ski Areas Association.
Physical Literacy: having the confidence and competence to be active for life
My career as an educator began with my Canadian Ski Instructors' Alliance Certification. My work in the ski industry involved teaching and coaching downhill skiing at all levels from entry-level participants to train-to-compete athletes, as well as training other industry professionals and developing programming. As a teacher, I have had many opportunities to grow as a “Physical Literacy Champion,” from developing new PE and Outdoor Education programming, to organizing the acquisition and integration of a class-set of snowshoes, founding an AMA youth run club, starting a middle school marching band program, and providing professional learning for staff and parent council; my teaching and leadership initiatives have always had a strong focus on providing everyday opportunity for increased engagement in learning through physical activity.
To this day, I have maintained a passion for inspiring a love for nature and active living in youth. My belief in the development of the whole student guides my decision-making and the goal of creating healthy spaces for our youth to learn is an endeavour which I will work tirelessly to support.

Physical Literacy: School Champions for Change in PE
In the spring of 2015, the K-6 PE teaching team at Banded Peak School had the opportunity to work with experts from WinSport Canada to further develop our understanding of Physical Literacy. Working with students and teachers in grades 1-6 in Phys Ed, I have been able to promote a skill-focused approach across our PE program. Our goal is to increase student confidence and competence using fundamental movement skills, moving PE from an activity-based to a skill-development rich program.
I worked with two fellow colleagues as a team of "school-based champions" to put the training into action and to mentor through example as well as sharing with staff and our parent council.
